Where does the very special spirit of this hotel come from?
When you step through the door of this former opera house you enter a tranquil oasis with perfect service: the hotel is considerably smaller than other luxury establishments in Munich and takes care of each individual guest marvelously. Especially the extremely courteous and unpretentious staff is what makes this hotel so elegant. Everyone is trying to make everything possible, professional and charming at the same time. When it comes to luxury the Mandarin Oriental Munich definitely goes one step further – because it is such an intimate retreat with top-notch service for everyone.

But also the building is quite special, isn’t it?
Built in 1880 and originally hosting the city’s ballroom, the beautiful Neo-Renaissance building became a hotel 30 years ago. Then, in the year 2000, Mandarin Oriental took over and rapidly established it as the best address in the Bavarian capital. It is located on a quiet corner, but right in the heart of Munich’s old town, surrounded by the State Opera, the famous Hofbräuhaus and the glamorous Maximilianstraße. All the good restaurants, cafés, art galleries and shops are around.

How is the feeling inside?
Overall it is contemporary luxury, but in a symbiosis with classic elements and traditional elegance. From the lobby to the rooms everything is remarkable high-quality. All guest rooms and suites, there are just 73 in total, are individually designed. Their generous size and the super-king-size beds, bespoke furniture, noble carpets and original artwork create an elegant residential feel. There is state-of-the art entertainment with huge Samsung flatscreen televisions in the bedroom and smaller ones in the bathroom. And of course, as in every Mandarin Oriental, there is a yoga mat for morning stretches.

In which room did we stay? Is there a VERY special room in the hotel?
We stayed in room number 306, which is a „Mandarin Room“, the highest room category but below the suite level. This is an excellent choice as the tremendous ceiling height gives the room a very special feeling. A very very special room by the way is the corner suite that has a circular bedroom with five windows and 180-degree views. Just spectacular.

There are also trendy places in the hotel …
This happens not often but in fact all public areas of the hotel are trendy places to be. Right next to the lobby area, The Lounge is one of the most elegant and relaxing retreats in the city. Beside coffee, afternoon tea and cakes they serve international snacks, for example a very recommendable club sandwich. The restaurant on the rooftop, called The Terrace, is a fabulous place for al fresco dining and a round of drinks during the summer month, open daily from 2 pm to 10 pm.

A meeting point for the chic crowd of the city and celebrities such as the Bayern Munich players is the Matsuhisa Munich on the first floor, atop the beautiful, new curved staircase. As a premiere in Germany the internationally celebrated Chef Nobuyuki (Nobu) Matsuhisa follows the same successful format as the original Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills and branches in trendy places around the world. The quality of the Japanese-Peruvian cuisine is top-notch, from the gorgeous Sushi to must-have dishes like Yellowtail Sashimi Jalapeno, Black Cod, King Crab Tempura and Beef Tenderloin Tataki. We recommend that you book a table for around 8:30 pm. Also don’t miss the Sunday brunch which includes all our favorite dishes.

The overall verdict?
In Munich the Mandarin Oriental is definitely playing in its own class.
